The Modern Languages

Learning Center

A High-Tech Facility for Language Instruction

Our lab was designed especially for language instruction. During the design process, we visited other language labs for ideas on its design. The ideas from those labs were used to create the best possible computer lab for our students. It is now used as a model for new language labs being designed and built in other nearby schools. Every year we replace computers and other equipment so that our students always have the latest technology avilable for their use.

The computer lab has 32 computers for students to use. It is open Monday through Friday during the day, and until 7 PM one per week. It is used by the students to do lessons and independent study. The computers have multiple languages, so students can email their families and friends in their home countries.

The lab computers have software programs that the ELI uses for testing at the beginning of each session. Each new student uses our test software to be placed in the correct level within the program to ensure that each student is immediately placed at the best possible level for that student. You will be placed in your appropriate level the first day of classes.

The computer lab contains a library of ESL materials available for students to use in the lab, including interactive ESL CDs, cassette tapes and videos. Students can use the lab to access the many ESL resources available on the internet. Each station has a cassette recorder for students to record or play ESL tapes. Many of our audio resources are being digitized and placed on servers for web access.

The lab is also used as a classroom for the computer skills classes taught by the ELI, using lab software for skills such as typing, word processing, presentations, email and internet. These skills are valuable for students when they continue their studies after completing the ELI program. Each computer has a full set of software for this instruction. In addition, the teacher's computer has a screen projector so that all the students can follow what the teacher is doing. Students also use this computer for presentations.
