Special Programs

The English Language Institute works with groups to design English language programs tailored for their specific needs, goals, and time frames.

We offer language and culture programs for groups who want to improve their English by immersing themselves in the culture in ways not provided by our regular programs. These programs can provide a combination of English reading, writing, speaking, and listening classes and computer classes. We have also worked with academic units at the university and professional contacts in the community to provide student contact with specific academic and professional disciplines.

Outside the classroom, the Spokane region offers many opportunities for recreation and cultural acitivities. Please visit the Spokane Visitors Bureau web site for a real look at our area.

The ELI also has its exceptional International Peer Advisor (IPA) program for all special programs. The IPAs are paired with special program students for conversation and many activities. Trips to a County Fair, Amusement Park, Concerts (of all types), Rock Climbing, Field Trips to the Ocean along with outings to shopping malls and bicycling can be included. Many times seasonal activities are included in American homes.

Issues in American Culture

This program was based on themes of "Saying Hello to a New Culture" and "Food and Shopping". Students were guided in journal writing and reading with an emphasis on oral skills. The class sessions were often in preparation for an afternoon activity, field trip or homestay experience.

There were 14 classroom hours per week in the mornings. Class size averaged 18 students. The computer lab was also used.

All instructors were experienced teachers of English as a Second Language hired by the English Language Institute.

To set up a similar program for your group, contact Jenifer Hermes (jhermes@mail.ewu.edu).
