MBA Preparation Program for International Students

Graduate Admission Application
International Supplemental Application

The English Skills Support (ESS) Program, run by the English Language Institute and College of Business and Public Administration, is designed for students who wish to improve their English language skills to gain admission to the MBA program at Eastern Washington University. It is a one-calendar year, intensive program focused on developing discussion skills and written communication skills equivalent to a 580/237/92-93 TOEFL score.

During the year, students complete the business foundation course work required to enter the MBA degree. Students in the ESS Program will complete the foundation courses in their first year and if admitted to the MBA degree will be able to complete their coursework in their second year. Altogether, this is a two calendar year program, that includes the foundation year and the MBA year.

Entry Requirements
To participate in the ESS program, students must possess a four-year degree from an accredited college or university. They must also be admitted to Eastern Washington University as a post-baccalaureate student with a recommendation from the English Language Institute or minimum 500 PB/ 173 CBT/61 iBT TOEFL with minimum 16 in each subsection.

Students with a TOEFL score between 550-580/213-237/80-92 are provisionally admissible to the MBA Program. These students have two options available to reach the equivalent of a 580/237/92 score without retaking the TOEFL:

  • 1. Study English by taking courses through the English Department until student gains proficiency as determined by the TESL program director. Courses would be included in student’s EWU credit load along with any recommended preparatory business courses.
  • 2. Study business with English language support through the English Language Institute’s MBA Preparation Program until student becomes proficient as determined by the ELI faculty. ELI courses are not included in the student’s EWU credit load and are not covered by EWU tuition. ELI support courses require payment of additional instructional fees.

Program Structure

Students take two business foundation courses along with English language support course work during each of the four quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring & Summer). The English language instructors attend the foundation courses along with the students. This provides opportunities for discussion, analysis, and understanding of the business foundation course material. In this way, the foundation courses and language instructor act as a bridge into the remainder of the MBA program.

Peer Advisors

As part of the ESS Program, American students called Peer Advisors will greet the ESS participants at the airport, provide orientation to campus life, and organize other activities on and off campus. The Peer Advisor will be an interesting and vital part of the ESS Program.

Cultural Mentors

Eastern Washington University international students, called Cultural Mentors, are available to help ESS participants. They help students ease their culture shock, to make adjustments into American life, and to generally feel comfortable here.

Admission to the MBA Program

Students in the ESS program will sit for the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) two quarters in advance of the quarter the student plans to enter the MBA program. Those students with an appropriate score on the GMAT and a GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 90 quarter credits (or equivalent) of their undergraduate work will be admitted to the MBA program. Successful completion of the ESS Program will be considered equivalent to the usual 580 PB/ 237 CBT/ 92 iBT TOEFL score admission requirement. GMAT preparation materials are available in the computer lab. The ELI is also a TOEIC test site.
