OVERVIEW OF GOALS:
LEVEL 1 LISTENING AND CONVERSATION

LISTENING/CONVERSATION 1
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

The students will be able to:

--identify sounds in a stream of language
--recognize sentence breaks
--recognize topic and main idea by listening to and comprehending key words;
--recognize words from areas, such as: objects, places, colors, dates, numbers, foods, sports, weather, time etc.

OVERVIEW OF GOALS:
LEVEL 2 LISTENING AND CONVERSATION

LISTENING/CONVERSATION 2
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

This class will help you:

--listen for main ideas and details
--develop language skills necessary to communicate in basic social interactions
--become familiar with common speaking patterns used in everyday social settings
--develop listening skills necessary for comprehending simple oral messages
--make predictions about what you will hear and how to respond, by stimulating active
--make predictions about content and anticipate response; and
--listening and involvement in basic communicative language functions.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

This class will help you:

--participate in active listening
--learn to take organized notes indicating main ideas, subtopics, and details
--practice summary writing
--develop an ability to understand academic English
--recognize discourse markers in lectures
--practice selective listening
--increase receptive vocabulary
--learn to make inferences

DISCUSSION 4
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

This class will help you:

--learn how to participate in small group discussions offering information, giving opinions, agreeing, disagreeing, clarifying, paraphrasing and summarizing
--learn the 4-step process of problem solving
--learn how to give speeches and feel comfortable speaking in front of a group

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the course are:

--to introduce 2nd language students to the research paper writing process
--to provide them with the skills necessary for writing papers of this type and length required in other university classes.
