The ELI Mission Statement

The Mission Statement of the English Language Institute is a threefold commitment to students, to the institution, and to the profession. ELI is committed to enabling qualified international students who have chosen to come to this program to integrate into the mainstream of higher education. The Institute will facilitate their adjustment into American life, helping individuals achieve their academic and cultural objectives. By preparing these students, ELI also helps Eastern Washington University accomplish its own international mission of "promoting international education and a culturally diverse academic community." Finally, the English Language Institute pursues its professional mission by upholding professional standards of positive interaction between students and teachers and providing optimum conditions for language learning.

Welcome from Dr. Edmund Yarwood, Executive Director of English Language Programs

Welcome to Eastern Washington University (founded in 1862) and to English Language Programs (founded in 1979). We have a long and distinguished history of providing high quality education to our students and have one of the few nationally accredited English Language Institutes in the United States.

The English Language Institute is a community of committed teachers and students. The ELI is well known for its high caliber of language instruction. In class the active use of English is emphasized; teachers use a variety of current methods and techniques. Teachers are also available outside of class for advising and individual help. We prepare students to enter further academic studies and professional arenas. In addition, the ELI enables students to experience American culture firsthand.

You will bring the world to our campus and help to create a spirit of internationalism here at EWU. As a community we look forward to learning more about your culture and hope that you use your time here to learn all you can about American life and culture. In this way we can all participate in the global community.

All the full-time faculty in the ELI have studied TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and have Master's Degrees in TESL. The faculty at the ELI maintain current knowledge of language teaching techniques by attending professional conferences, taking part in workshops, and reading professional literature. In addition, all have some knowledge of at least one foreign language
